Whenever a movie comes along bearing a title that makes no sense, I tend to shy away from it. This is one movie that I kept my distance from for quite some time. The only reason I ended up seeing it was because it was on heavy rotation on a small UHF station. The movie made a stir when it came out, most likely because of John Hurt's quiet performance, and Geena Davis's queerish one. Her big screen 'debut' is admirable, since the role was demanding (?), since she went on from the stand-out t.v. show Bull_______.
Overall, this movie is a coming-of-age film for adults. The lead character just suddenly grips onto his life and his place in it. Along came Davis in his journey, and she took him on a 'tour.' I hope that cleans up the title.
---------Like any John Hurt movie, this drama has soft tones to it, and some earthy hues. It's enough to put you to sleep. That aside, the look of the film is subpar, and does not translate well to the small screen.
---------There isn't much to say here. I suppose it is the wanton need for someone to write a screenplay, produce it, and direct one, dealing with the mental illness of an adult that has not taken any responsibility, just going through life where it takes him or her, and then stopping suddenly, when waves get their strongest, and disrupting everyone else's lives. That is where the drama comes in. Ooooh!
---------Oh, I suppose Geena Davis did it better than anyone else. She was clownish, and slightly believable. To compare, think along the lines of Madame Sousatzka. Other than her, all the rest were bleeding hearts. Oh, forsake thee...!
